Al Stohlman fue un pionero en la difusión de la artesanía en cuero. Él y su esposa Ann escribieron cientos de artículos en revistas, realizaron dibujos y herramientas que actualmente se siguen utilizando. Tienen un museo con gran parte de su obra en el vestíbulo de la fábrica Tandy Leather, en Fort Worth, Texas . Existe el Premio al mérito Al Stohlman se otorga anualmente a un talabartero que haya demostrado una dedicación continua al oficio.
